House Rules

Climbing can be dangerous, it is important to know the risks, read and follow our house rules.

1. Liquid Chalk Only

Gecko Climb is liquid chalk only. Please keep powdered chalks at home. This is to protect the health of our staff, the functioning of our airconditioning and the cleanliness of the gym. Liquid chalk is sold at cost at the front counter.

2. Safe landing

  • Climb down when possible, use any holds — the grey holds are there to help.
  • Practice landing from a low height to gain confidence.
  • Land on both feet evenly — bend your knees & roll onto your butt.
  • Avoid rotating your body or using your arms when landing.
  • Let the mat absorb your impact.

3. Bouldering and climbing etiquette

  • Shoes & shirts must be worn when on the wall at all times.
  • If a climber is already on the wall, let them finish before you start — identify if their climb will cross paths with yours.
  • If someone has just brushed a climb, it’s their go next.
  • Help promote a safe bouldering environment by watching out for people around you.
  • Spoiler alert — ask before giving advice on a boulder someone else is working on.

4. Strength and training areas

  • No under 16s in the strength & training area.
  • Pack away & wipe down equipment after use.
  • Do not drop weights.
  • Ask for a spot if you need one.

5. Kids at Gecko

  • We want our kids to have a great time at Gecko but their safety is our greatest priority.
  • There are supervision ratio requirements for children depending on their age. Click the button below for more information.
  • Certain parts of the gym are off limits to children of certain ages. Click the button below for more information.

6. Dogs at Gecko

Pups are welcome at Gecko Climb — please make sure they’re supervised at all times, are on lead, off the mats & behaving appropriately. You’re responsible for ensuring they’re well behaved and secured at one of our tie-up stations. Dogs cannot be in the cafe area of the gym for environmental health regulations (this does not apply to service dogs).

We appreciate not everyone wants to get up close & personal & ask that you & your furry friend respect the space of others — dog owners may be asked to remove their dogs from Gecko if they cannot abide by our puppy policy.

7. Climbing Shoes

Climing shoes need to be worn on our bouldering and climbing walls. If you are renting climbing shoes from us and need to go to the bathroom, please take them off before going into the bathroom.

8. Personal Harness Use

A customer may use their own personal climbing harness, however this is subject to inspection by Gecko Climb staff members. The harness must:

  • Be appropriate for climbing, and comply with EN 12277
  • Be less than 10 years from date of manufacture
  • Have no visible damage picked up during the hands-on inspection
  • buckles are threaded correctly.
  • Have ‘sewn ends’ such that the harness cannot be un-threaded from the buckles and rethreaded incorrectly.

Where a customer's harness is deemed unsafe (e.g. due to age or damage) and unable to be used, a complimentary hire harness will be offered for the session. A note must be added to the customer’s profile, and the customer will be informed that for future sessions they must use a different harness (subject to the same inspection), or pay to hire a harness.
