Rope Climbing (up to 10.5 metres)

Rope climbing takes place on our taller climbing walls and uses a harness to keep climbers safely attached to a rope. There are two types of rope climbing at Gecko Climb; auto-belay and top-rope:

1. Auto-Belay Climbing (Standard for School Groups)

Auto-belays are automatic safety devices that gently lower climbers to the ground when they let go at the top of the wall.

  • No partner is required to hold the rope

  • Simple, safe, and ideal for beginners

  • Allows students to climb independently under staff supervision

Unless specifically requested by the school, all rope climbing for school groups will be conducted on auto-belays only.

2. Top-Rope Climbing (By Request Only)

Top-rope climbing involves a rope that is manually controlled by a trained belayer at the bottom of the wall.

  • Requires specialised supervision and instruction

  • Requires additional Gecko Climb staff, depending on the number of students

  • Must be requested in advance when booking

If your school would like to include top-rope climbing, please let us know during booking so we can confirm staffing and supervision requirements. Only students over 13 years of age are allowed to top-rope belay at Gecko Climb.

Bouldering (max 4.5m)

Bouldering is a style of climbing done without ropes, on shorter walls, with an industry standard impact attenuation system (safety mats) underneath.

  • Climbs are closer to the ground
  • Focuses on movement, balance, and problem-solving
  • Very popular for school and youth groups
Supervision & Gym Etiquette

Schools will need to bring the following ratio of teachers to students based on group size:

  • For school groups with less than 15 students, at least 1 teacher needs to be in attendance to support with supervising the group.
  • For school groups with between 16 and 30 students, at least 2 teachers need to attend with the group to support supervision.

We ask all visiting groups to:

  • Follow instructor and staff directions at all times as well as the rules listed on our website here
  • Respect other climbers who may be using the gym during the day
  • Observe basic climbing gym etiquette, including waiting turns and staying clear of active climbers

Our staff will provide a safety briefing and clear guidance at the start of each session to both students and teachers.

Call or email us on the contact form for more information or to make a booking for your school!

Please note that there will be a reschedule/cancellation fee of $100 if providing less than 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule a school group booking to cover the additional staff costs we will incur.
